For the last 15 months or so, Abbott’s Pharma Products Division has been on a journey to build up our alliance management function. In doing so, we have taken a hard look at our existing capabilities, identified gaps, and moved expeditiously to address them. While both our needs and our capabilities will continue to evolve over time, today we are proud to have in place a strong team, a powerful set of tools, and a senior team aligned around the value of being a great partner. In this presentation, we will review in particular how we have used tools to help provide more transparency, improve coordination internally and with partners, and present a more complete picture of our portfolio of relationships to senior management.

3:00 Structuring Alliance Management to Complement Project Management Practices
The buzz around alliance management in the biopharmaceutical world has certainly increased over the last few years, and for good reason. As the traditional, fully integrated R&D model has evolved to rely more heavily on external collaborations, companies big and small find themselves needing to manage multiple, complex relationships effectively. The exact form and function of “alliance management”, however, varies from one company to another based on strengths, weaknesses, constraints, corporate cultures, and the very nature of collaborations undertaken. Additionally, given the inherent synergies with project management, existing practices for managing the project environment can strongly influence the design of a separate alliance management function. Furthermore, once a company has determined what model and “best practices” to adopt, effecting the organizational change required to instill new mindsets and skills can be daunting. This presentation will guide participants through practical insights into how to define and implement an alliance management capability that complements project management capabilities and best suits their company’s objectives and requirements by:
  • Identifying organizational needs
  • Translating needs into an appropriate alliance management framework
  • Integrating the new framework into the existing organizational structure
  • Defining an implementation plan 
  • Leading the organization through the change process
  • Illustrating how TAP Pharmaceuticals has navigated this process through a comprehensive case study

3:45 Maintaining a Successful Partnership of a Drug Company and Device Company
In the early 1990’s Wyeth and Medtronic Sofamor Danek entered into a collaboration capitalizing on the expertise of each company. Wyeth researchers identified and isolated rhBMP-2, recombinant human bone morphogenic protein-2, and Medtronic Sofamor Danek had demonstrated expertise in the development, manufacturing and marketing of spinal implant devices used in the treatment of spinal degenerative diseases and deformities. In 2002, INFUSE Bone Graft was launched in the United States representing a formulation of rhBMP-2 combined with a bovine-derived absorbable collagen sponge for spinal fusion procedures. This original application has led to expanded indications and dosage forms.
